Public data atlas / India

What does work
make possible?

A research-grade atlas of labour, security, time, earnings and skills across India. Move beyond a single headline rate and inspect the structure beneath it—with survey design, uncertainty and provenance kept visible.

The national frame

One country.
Many labour markets.

The long view · external context

The survey is a window.
The economy is the field.

Trace India’s labour signal against growth, prices, digital access and the global development context. These are deliberately separate statistical lenses—not stitched respondents and not causal explanations.

Selected comparator economies · latest available year

India in the wider labour system.

Bubble size is population. Horizontal position is GDP per capita at PPP; vertical position is the modeled female employment-to-population ratio. Hover for the exact year and provenance.

The core instrument · 36 States and UTs

A labour capability
surface, not a league table.

Each row is a State or UT. Each column is a condition of labour capability. The colour is a within-indicator percentile rank; the detail panel returns to the original survey estimate and its uncertainty.

How to read: darker cells indicate stronger relative position on that dimension; the earnings column is ranked by median regular monthly earnings.

Statistical boundary. Ranks are descriptive and independent by axis. They are not a composite index, causal claim or hidden “best State” score. Suppressed or unreliable cells remain visible as gaps.

Linked state space

Where does access meet
economic security?

A descriptive view of the State/UT cloud. The axes and colour can change; the interpretation cannot: association is not causation.

State economic context · linked, not merged

Work access inside
unequal economies.

Link a PLFS capability measure to official per-capita NSDP at constant 2011–12 prices. The state income series is an aggregate context layer and lags the PLFS anchor; the plot is descriptive, not a productivity frontier.

Interpretation boundary. A richer state can have a different labour structure, but this view does not estimate a causal relationship. Missing state-income estimates remain missing; no value is imputed into the public surface.

State / UT ranking with uncertainty

Precision before position.

Bars show point estimates; whiskers show the 95% confidence interval. Rankings are a reading aid, not a composite measure of welfare.

Urban rotating panel · 2023–24

The labour market
in motion.

Point estimates with design-aware 95% confidence bands where available. Quarterly urban series are current weekly status estimates.

Employment relationship

How workers are engaged

Broad NIC 2008 group

Conditions of work

Security is
not one question.

Contract, leave and social protection are shown separately, plus the share of regular employees reporting all three. These indicators are conditional on regular salaried/wage employment—not shares of all workers.

Distributional evidence

Monthly earnings are
a distribution.

₹ nominal · CWS-defined reporting universe

Quantile uncertainty uses a two-subsample replicate diagnostic. It is not an official PLFS quantile-variance formula.

Urban rotating panel

Observed next-quarter mobility.

Unweighted · descriptive

Matched sample movements are not population transition probabilities and do not identify causal effects.

Statistical contract

Designed around the survey,
not around the chart.

Annual estimates use the PLFS interpenetrating-subsample combined-ratio or combined-mean variance. Rural variance cells retain sub-strata; urban cells retain strata. Each row carries its universe, multiplier, unweighted and effective n, standard error, confidence interval, RSE, reliability decision, release and method.
